Acrylic Nails At Home: Step by Step How-To Tutorial

Hey, guys! It's Mary. Today we are introducing a talented new nail artist to the My team, and her name is April. April does amazing work with acrylics, hard gels, nail extensions, and more. For today's nail art tutorial, she will be showing you guys how to do acrylic nails step by step. So if you've been interested in learning how to do acrylic nails at home, this tutorial is for you.

First, we need to carefully push the cuticle back, and file the length of your natural nail, making the edge rounded.  Use a soft file. After this, buff the nail with a soft buffer. Don't push too hard. We need to make the nail matte, not to file it off. Pay close attention to cuticle zone and sides. Remove dust from the nail using a cotton pad and alcohol.

Next step: choose the right size of the tip to your nail. It should completely cover the edge of your nail, but should not be larger or smaller than the width of your nail. Using a brush, apply a small amount of glue on the tip and attach to the nail. Hold firmly for 5 to 10 seconds.

Using scissors or a cutter, cut the excessive length and file to the desired shape. I do almond. Soften the transition from tip to nail using a soft file, but don't file the natural nail. Using the same file, make the edge matte. This will provide better adhesion with the acrylic.

Remove dust with alcohol. Apply a primer only on the natural nail. And now the hardest part: acrylic application. Pour a small amount of monomer into a glass, and choose a desired powder color. I choose light beige. Put the brush into the monomer to remove all of the air bubbles. Slide the tip of the brush on the surface of the powder to make an acrylic ball.

The ball should not be too liquid and drip on the brush, or be too dry and have chunks of dry powder. You can practice on a napkin before applying it on the nail.

We need to put the ball not far from the cuticle, and spread it down with the central part of the brush. Try to flatten the ball. Don't spread it with the tip. Add one more ball if needed. Please, pay attention to the fact that you should not apply acrylic on the skin.  Avoid it, and if it happens, immediately clean the skin from acrylic with the brush.

Acrylic cures fast so you have to work fast as well. After you finish the job, let the acrylic cure for 3 minutes. Now shape the almond with a hard file for fake nails. File the edge and sides, making it rounded. And now, file the top to make it rounded and not flat.

Please notice that the nail should have different thicknesses in different areas. At the cuticle, the material should be very thin, and the border of the acrylic and the nail should not be visible.

File off the excess of material in this area to half a millimeter but not completely. The same applies to the edge. It should not be too thick. Leave 1 to 2 millimeters. Make the same thickness for the sides but not thinner, or this could lead to breaks.

File from sides to the center, with rounded movements from side to side. This will make the shape rounded. When you have made sure you like the shape, you can start buffing. Use a dual-sided buffer. One side of it should be medium coarse and the other, soft coarse. Buff with the medium side first to remove large file scratches. After that, apply cuticle oil and buff with the soft side until the surface is smooth. Your nails are done!
